This year's Wear It Purple theme is Colours of Courage.
Courage can look like speaking up, standing out and creating change. It can also take quieter forms of bravery, like living authentically, coming out, asking for support, standing beside someone, or choosing pride and hope in spaces where being yourself does not always feel easy.
To mark the day, we're hosting an online conversation that all TAFE SA students are welcome to join.
📅 Tuesday 1 September 🕒 3.30 pm – 4.30 pm 💻 Online via Microsoft Teams (no registration required)
On the day, you can access the webinar by clicking the link below.
Hosted by CB Bonnar, Senior Relationship Manager with Pride in Diversity, our partner in LGBTIQA+ inclusion, the session brings together two community advocates to share their stories.
Budi is a community advocate, workplace trainer, consultant and sexual health researcher based in Naarm Melbourne. Budi has more than 20 years of involvement with LGBTQIA+ communities and is passionate about equity and justice through an international lens. Budi is from Indonesia, a Muslim, non-binary, a former international student, and is currently studying executive coaching. You'll find them walking around their neighbourhood each morning, coffee in hand, to "wake the brain".
Nyo is a Burmese non-binary community advocate and visual storyteller passionate about LGBTIQ+ inclusion and belonging. She began her advocacy as a social issues reporter at The Myanmar Times, amplifying LGBTIQ+ voices, and was recognised with the 2019 LGBTIQ Media Ally Award through &PROUD, supported by the Australian Embassy in Myanmar. An Australia Awards Scholar, Nyo completed a Master of Sustainable Development at Flinders University, specialising in gender equality and disability inclusion. Now based in South Australia, she continues to contribute to the local LGBTIQ+ community through advocacy, lived experience and art, with exhibitions exploring identity, migration and belonging.
The session will be held in Microsoft Teams, which offers accessibility features and screen reader support.
Auslan interpretation will be provided. Captions can be accessed in English, Vietnamese, Chinese, Spanish, Arabic and Persian.
If you have any questions, or need support to join the session, please contact OCC@tafesa.edu.au.
Wear It Purple was founded in response to the harm caused by discrimination, bullying and rejection experienced by LGBTIQA+ young people. Conversations like this one can bring up a lot, whatever your own experience.
If you'd like to talk to someone, free and confidential counselling is available to all TAFE SA students through Student Success and Wellbeing. You don't need a reason or a referral, and you can reach out about anything affecting your study or your wellbeing.
