National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week is held in the first week of July each year and gives all Australians the opportunity to learn about First Nations cultures, achievements and histories.
NAIDOC Week grew from the struggles of Australia's First Nations peoples to achieve better conditions, citizenship status and recognition, beginning in the 1920s. The first Day of Mourning protest in 1938, one of the world's first civil rights gatherings, was an important precursor to NAIDOC Week. These protests were held each year on the Sunday before Australia Day into the 1950s.
NAIDOC Week 2026 runs from Sunday 5 July to Sunday 12 July. This year's theme, '50 Years of Deadly', marks the 50th anniversary of NAIDOC Week.
