No Knives on TAFE SA Campuses

Jun 30, 2025

New amendments to the laws regarding the possession of knives come into effect as of 1 July 2025 making it an offence, without lawful excuse, to possess a knife on a TAFE SA campus. This offence carries a maximum penalty of $2,500 or imprisonment for 6 months for a first offence, and $5,000 or imprisonment for 12 months for a subsequent offence.

These amendments have been introduced as part of the government’s efforts to ensure the safety of South Australian students at every level. They already applied at primary and secondary schools and now apply at TAFE SA and universities.

While on campus, TAFE SA students should not possess any type of knife (this includes pocketknives, utility knives, miniature keychain knives, etc.) without lawful excuse.

Butter knives, plastic knives and wooden disposable knives used in connection with eating are exempt from the definition of a knife, unless they are specifically used or carried with the intention of being used as a weapon.

If students require the use of a knife in their training, they should raise the matter with their lecturer or Educational Manager who will be able to provide guidance.
