Networking, or notworking?

TAFE SA staff and student networking at an AMI evening.

Let’s be real - meeting new people can feel awkward. But if you're looking for a new job or fresh experience, building your network might be one of the fastest ways to get there.

Even if networking feels unfamiliar or out of your comfort zone, it’s worth giving it a go. You never know where a casual conversation could lead.

Tap into the hidden job market

You’ve probably heard the phrase: “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” There’s a reason for this - many jobs are never advertised on Seek.com.au or on I WORK FOR SA. They’re filled through word of mouth, personal recommendations, or online profiles that catch an employer’s eye.

This is what’s called the hidden job market, and it’s huge. In fact, around 60 to 80 per cent of job opportunities in Australia are never listed publicly. If you're not putting yourself out there, you could be missing out on your dream job.

Build your confidence, step by step

If networking makes you nervous, don’t stress. Like any skill, it gets easier with practice. Here are some simple ways to get started:

  • Create a short intro (your ‘elevator pitch’).
Think of it like this—you’ve got 30 seconds in a lift with someone you admire. How do you introduce yourself? What makes you memorable?
  • Go to events with a game plan
Whether it’s a community meet-up or an industry talk, plan a few questions ahead of time. Try these:
    • How did you get into your role?
    • What advice would you give to someone starting out?
    • What do you look for when hiring?
  • Remember, everyone feels the same.
Most people at networking events feel a bit unsure. You don’t have to be the loudest voice—showing up and listening is a great first move.

Your network is already bigger than you think

You don’t need to start from scratch. Your network includes family, friends, classmates, workmates, and even your local community. Let people know what you’re looking for. A simple conversation could lead to a new job or industry contact.

Ready to put it into practice?

We’ve got exciting networking activities planned for Campus Alive this August.

It’s your chance to:

  • meet people in your industry
  • grow your confidence
  • make connections that count.
