My computer is running Windows S, can I install Chrome to connect to my online class?

This version of Windows only allows applications published from the Windows store to be installed. At present Chrome or Chromium Edge are not available in the store. You will need to use an alternative device to successfully join and interact with your class.

I am not able to be heard or seen by my lecturer. How do I fix this?

This generally occurs in cases where the camera\microphone is accidentally blocked. On first connect to any session you are asked to allow access to the camera and microphone. If block is accidentally clicked this can be changed later in the browser privacy settings. Please ensure you are using a supported web browser. We recommend Google Chrome.

Please refer below for how to check these settings:

      Chrome
      Safari
      Firefox

I am using a Windows computer and was able to hear my lecturer for about 30 seconds but can’t anymore

This is a commonly reported issue when using Edge. Edge is not a supported browser for Collaborate. Please confirm you are using Google Chrome Chrome and not Edge edge.

If you have connected to your session in Edge please exit the session and rejoin using Chrome.

I can’t hear my lecturer and am using an up to date version of Google Chrome

Please check your sound defaults and ensure that your sound is up.

On a Macintosh - go to Apple > System Preferences > Sound.

On a Windows computer go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound or search for "sound" and select Sound from the Control Panel in the search menu.

I get a J10\J11 error when trying to connect to my session

This error means that the connection has been blocked. This can be caused by:

      • Browser extension\content filter application such as Net Nanny
      • Web filtering (work networks)
      • Firewalls

I have clicked the Collaborate link for my class but doesn't join session

Popups are blocked in your browser. For Chrome, an icon will show to right of address bar indicating the popup has been blocked:

      collaborate-icon

Click icon and click always allow popups. Restart Chrome to apply.

I get an "A03 - Session not found" or "Token not valid" error after joining my session.

Your session has disconnected and not been able to re-establish the connection. Please close the tab and click on the join link again to re-join your session. Reach out to your lecturer if you are still not able to connect.

View your course in different formats

Looking for course content that fits your learning needs, your busy schedule, and your multiple devices? Alternative Formats through Ally transform selected course files into different formats to help you learn better.

    • Ally icon - capitol A with an arrow pointing downward in the top right and corner

You may notice an icon next to some of the documents in your LEARN course. If it is available, click on the Ally icon (the capitol ‘A’ with a down arrow - like the image above) and select alternative formats”. Alternative formats are available on selected documents and are automatically generated versions of the original text. The format you select may initially take a few minutes to download. You can save this alternative format file on your device. Remember, the quality of the alternative formats can depend on the original and the quality of the automated conversion process, so check the original file if something doesn’t look right.

      Enhance your Understanding

Did you know that when you engage different senses, like reading a text and listening to a text, you activate different parts of the brain, which can enhance your understanding? For example, try reading the Tagged PDF first and then listening to the Audio MP3 for review. Or, if you are struggling to understand the text, you might try listening and reading at the same time.

      Improve your Time Management

With your busy schedule, maximising your time on task and study opportunities can help you reach your learning goals. For example, if you’re reading on your mobile, try the HTML format for a file that’s responsive to your screen size so that you can read faster and with fewer distractions. Or listen to theAudio MP3 when you’re on the go for extra time reviewing your materials.

      Find a Higher Quality Alternative

The readability of your course materials can affect your comprehension and study practices. For example, if you notice the original course file is a scanned PDF that you can’t highlight, copy-paste, or keyword search, try the OCRed PDF for an editable, easier to read document. Or if the font of the original is hard to read, try the ePub format to customise the font and contrast.

      Become a Better Learner
Think about the best format for your learning context and objective and include multiple formats in your study process. Leading up to practicals or assessments, keep a journal of the ones you use to discover how you learn best.
